Songs, Poems and Nursery Rhymes

The following are some of the songs/poems/and nursery rhymes we will be
learning this year. *There will be many more than this, but these are the ones we will sing most often with the themes they go along with! I will keep them posted all year so you may help your child
remember the words!  I will let you know in our newsletters which ones we are learning each week.

SEPTEMBER

Nursery Rhymes (We start the beginning of the year with MANY nursery rhymes. These are usually a few of the favorites:)

Jack and Jill
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
and Jill came tumbling after.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Went up the water spout
Down came the rain
and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun
and dried up all the rain,
and the itsy, bitsy spider
went up the spout again.

 Hickory Dickory Dock
The mouse ran up the clock,
The clock struck one,
The mouse ran down,
Hickory, Dickory Dock

Humpty Dumpty
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,
All the kings horses and all the kings men,
Couldn't put Humpty together again!

Hall Poem (once in a while we will say this before going down the hall-the
kids LOVE this for some reason!)
I'm giving myself a great big hug!
I'm standing straight and tall,
I'm looking right ahead of me,
I'm ready for the hall!

Leaving...
See you later alligator,
Bye bye Butterfly
Give a hug ladybug,
Be sweet parakeet,
Blow a kiss goldfish,
See you soon racoon,
Take care polar bear,
Out the door dinosaur!

RED
Red is an apple,
Red is a cherry,
Red is a rose,
and a ripe strawberry!

YELLOW
Yellow is a star,
Yellow is the sun,
Yellow is the moon
When the day is done!

BLUE
Blue is the ocean,
Blue is the sky,
Blue are the blueberries,
we put into a pie!

The Color Song (to the tune of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider")

Orange is a carrot,
Yellow is a pear.
Green is the grass,
And brown is a bear.
Purple is a plum,
Blue is the sky.
Black is the dirt,
And red is cherry pie.

Make a Circle (to the tune of "Oh My Darling")

Make a circle,
Make a circle,
Make a circle like the sun.
Everybody make a circle,
Make a circle,
Like the sun.

Good Morning (to the tune of "Happy Birthday")
Good Morning to you,
Good Morning to you,
Good Morning Dear Kindergartner's,
Good Morning to You!

APPLE poem
5 red apples hanging in a tree,
The juicest apples you ever did see.
The wind came by and gave
an angry frown,
And one little apple came tumbling down.

(Continue with 4,3,2 and finally 1!)

Way up high in the apple tree
Were 3 little apples smiling at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could,
Down came the apples...
Mmm, were they good!

"Eat an Apple'
Eat an apple,
Save the core.
Plant the seeds,
and grow some more!

STOP, DROP & ROLL (Fire prevention)
(tune of Frere Jacques)
If my clothes
Should catch on fire,
I'll stop, drop and roll,
Stop, drop and roll.
I'll put out the fire,
I'll put out the fire.
That's how it will go.
That's how it will go!

Always Alert
I'm a smoke detector and I say "Beep," (squat down)
I'm your nose when you're asleep (point to nose, lay head on hands)
If there's a fire and smoke is all around (wiggle hand and fingers around)
I'll wake you up with a very loud sound (jump up and raise your hands high)
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

OCTOBER

ONCE I HAD A PUMPKIN (Dr. Jean's website)
Oh, once I had a pumpkin, a pumpkin, a pumpkin,
Oh, once I had a pumpkin with no face at all.
With no eyes and no nose and no mouth and no teeth.
Oh, once I had a pumpkin with no face at all.
So I make a jack-o-lantern, jack-o-lantern, jack-o-lantern.
So I make a jack-o-lantern with a big, funny face!

 PICK-a-Pick-a-Pumpkin Song
Pick-a-pick a Pumpkin from the pile,
We can make his eyes and a great big smile.
Pick-a-pick-a Pumpkin round and clean,
Then we'll be ready for Halloween,
Halloween...Halloween...then we'll be ready for Halloween!

JACK O. HAPPY (children make a circle around their head before beginning)
This is Jack O. Happy
This is Jack O. Sad
This is Jack O. Spooky
This is Jack O. Mad
This is Jack in pieces small (hold out hands),
But in a pie he's best of all (pat tummy)!

NOVEMBER
I'm Glad I'm Not a Turkey
Oh, I'm glad I'm not a turkey,
A turkey, a turkey,
Oh, I'm glad I'm not a turkey,
On Thanksgiving Day.
They stuff you and bake you,
And then they all taste you.
Oh, I'm glad I'm not a turkey,
On Thanksgiving Day.

DECEMBER
The Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman
Had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little rabbit
Looking for his lunch
Ate that little snowman's nose...
Nibble, nibble, CRUNCH!

The Penguin
I am a bird you know quite well,
All dressed in black and white.
And even though I do have wings
They're not designed for flight.
I waddle, waddle, waddle,
On my funny little feet.
Across the icy snow I go
To find a fishy treat!

Snowflakes and Cupcakes
    (Tune: Raindrops and Lemon Drops)
If all the snowflakes were chocolate covered cupcakes
Oh, what a snow it would be!
I'd go outside with my mouth open wide (open mouth and stick out tongue)
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
If all of the snowflakes were chocolate covered cupcakes
Oh, what a snow it would be!

JANUARY

Time For Hibernation (Frere Jacques tune)

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Big black bear, big black bear?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
In a log, in a lair.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Hanging bat, hanging bat?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
In a cave is where I'm at.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Garter snake, garter snake?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
In the mud, in a lake.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Toad and frog, toad and frog?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
In a pond, near a log.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Meadow mouse, meadow mouse?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
in a field, near a house.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Turtle friend, turtle friend?
Time for hibernation.
What is your location?
In the stream, till winter's end!

FEBRUARY

Roses are Red,

Violets are Blue,

Sugar is Sweet,

And so are You!

I know how to brush my teeth,

I brush on top and underneath

Up like a rocket

Down like a plane,

Back and forth like a choo-choo train.

MARCH

St. Patrick’s Day Song
(tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

I’m looking for a leprechaun,
Leprechaun, leprechaun.
I’m looking for a leprechaun.
Do you know where he’s gone?

He wears a suit that’s made of green,
Made of green, made of green.
He wears a suit that’s made of green.

Do you know where he’s gone?

He lives by a rainbow and hides his gold,
Hides his gold, hides his gold.
He lives by a rainbow and hides his gold.
Do you know where he’s gone?

If you see a leprechaun,
Leprechaun, leprechaun.
If you see a leprechaun,
Please tell me where he’s gone!

APRIL/MAY
5 Little Ducks...
Five Little Ducks that I once knew,
Big ones, little ones, skinny ones too.
But the one little duck
with a feather on his back,
He led the others with a
"Quack, Quack, Quack!"

Bunny Poem:
I'm sure a bunny must remember
Everything he's told
Because his ears are oh so large...
Just think how much they hold!
